What Is Low Vision?

Low vision refers to patients with uncorrectable, reduced vision. There are varying degrees of low vision, depending on your vision in the better eye with the best possible glasses correction. Low vision also refers to those with visual field loss, also known as peripheral vision.

Symptoms

Low vision can range from limited peripheral vision to near-total loss of light perception. Types of low vision include central vision loss, side vision loss, blurred vision near and far, reduced contrast sensitivity, glare light sensitivity, and night blindness.

Risk Factors

Low vision can be caused by various conditions, including macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, retinitis pigmentosa, amblyopia, retinopathy of prematurity, retinal detachment, and acquired (traumatic) brain injury.
