What is Keratoconus?

Keratoconus is an eye condition where your cornea becomes thinner and bulges outward into a cone shape. Your cornea is the clear, dome-shaped front of your eye, and when its shape becomes irregular, it causes blurred vision, light sensitivity, and glare. It can lead to worsening eye problems, but it can be corrected.

Symptoms

Symptoms of keratoconus can change as the disease progresses. They include distorted and blurred vision, light and glare sensitivity, issues driving at night, frequent eyeglass prescription changes, and sudden clouding or worsening of the vision.

Risk Factors

The cause of keratoconus is uncertain, but environmental and genetic factors seem to be involved. Risk factors include family history, rubbing the eyes vigorously, and having certain conditions like Marfan syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, hay fever, asthma, Down syndrome, and retinitis pigmentosa.

Why is it Important to Diagnose /
and Treat Keratoconus?

When keratoconus advances, it can cause swelling and scarring, affecting your vision. This may require a transplant along with causing worsening vision problems. Treating keratoconus with scleral lenses, which arc over your cornea and sit on the retina, will provide you with clear vision and a controlled environment that’s healthier for a cone-shaped retina and dry eyes.
